Vancouver Fashion Week (recap)
Everyone's jaws dropped when model Alivia Watkins stepped onto the runway wearing one of Berenice Jimenez's gowns. It was a nude dress with gold details and on her head was a floral crown with gold and white accessories. I have always dreamed of attending a fashion show, hoping it could be in New York or Paris because I never knew there was one in Vancouver.
Here is a recap of the show I attended in Vancouver on October 24, 2021. We entered through the main gates of the David Lam Hall, the Chinese cultural centre of Vancouver. There was a light bulb display that spelled out VFW with yellow, orange and pink balloons around the display. Before entering the building we were required to have our vaccine passports checked and then we received a green wristband for general admission. Inside bright lights were shining toward the stage and I was sitting in the second row, which provided an amazing view of the runway. The first designer of the night was Alex S. Yu, and there was a video of the models wearing her designs before the show began. After the video, the models walked the runway. My favourite models were Sierra Sidwell and Rayanne. Sierra was wearing an orange dress with a white turtleneck underneath, nude leggings with black detailing and orange sandals, which looked amazing. Rheyanne was wearing a brown crop top with an orange jacket on top, paired with a brown skirt, orange sandals with white socks and an orange bucket hat. I would love to wear Rayannes outfit to an event because it was beautiful and unique.
I found the Sunday Morning label by Elena Borra very impressive. Most of her designs had some type of sea creature on them. Some of my favourite outfits were worn by the model's Rosa Morgan and Celina Boserup. Rosa wore a black two-piece with red starfish designs and a red leather jacket with faux fur on the sleeves. For her makeup, she wore a stunning shade of red lipstick. Celina wore a black dress with orange octopus detailing paired with orange high-rise boots and an orange trench coat with faux fur along the sleeves. The end of the show was amazing. The model Anita Sengara wore a black bodysuit with a coat showing all the colours that the models wore. The top of the coat was lime green, the sleeves were purple, the bottom was orange, and her collar was red.
The last show of the night was Indigenous designers Sophia Seward-Good and Aunalee Boyd-Good with the label Ay Lelum. I admired the diversity in the show because everyone had a different body type and skin complexion. The models which stood out were Shenise Sigsworth and Tika. Shenise wore a blue mesh dress with black and red Indigenous detailing. Tika the dog was wearing a red bodysuit with a black pattern. I would never have thought to see a dog walking along a runway, however, she did a great job.
Overall, attending the show was an amazing experience. I was able to see the versatility in the designs and the diversity of the models. I will be attending the spring fashion show with the members of Daily Dose of Blackness.
