DJ-ing to inspire
Blinkz is a DJ based in Vancouver who mixes different music genres to produce the best vibes. He’s even gone to places like Saskatchewan to showcase his skills. His advice for new DJs is to stay dedicated, even when things don’t go well because success is on the way.
What does being a Black creative mean to you?
I think it’s, in a way, just being here to pave the way for other Black influencers. A lot don’t get the opportunity to have a voice out there, so I just like the fact that I can inspire people to do what I do themselves.
Who inspires your work/creative process?
People around me, my friends, all the talented DJs in this city. Just being able to connect, learn and see what they do inspired me to do better for myself.
Why did you start DJ-ing?
It just fits my whole persona. You know I love fashion, I love music, so it was bound to happen honestly. Mixing music together was something fun, and people around me did it, so I got inspired.
Are there any challenges you’ve encountered while DJ-ing?
I’d say just being able to dedicate your time, because being a DJ, you have to be dedicated to what you do. You’ll have to go out every weekend. A lot of people may not like that, but it comes with the job.
Advice for upcoming DJs?
I’d just say stay dedicated to your grind. It’s a long process, so don’t give up too early because failure comes, but success is around the corner. So, just stay dedicated and keep up the grind.
