To be a black musician means to be creative and to create with a purpose because our experiences can create really deep and amazing art. I feel like a lot of black artists have to deal with being Kind of put down or looked past. So I feel like it means being a black musician to persevere.
I'm a Christian hip-hop R&B artist. I started not doing the genre that I do; I was just a regular hip hop R& B artist. But, I think as I grew in my faith; I realized that a lot of the music that I listen to doesn't align with what I would say I believe in or what I stand for and I felt like that was wrong, like to me and my spirit. So I want to be someone who gives people hope and makes people feel closer to the God that they believe in.
I want people to think and kind of reflect. Also feel positive, happy and hopeful. Mainly those three things. I'm someone who records from a very emotional standpoint and always puts emotion into my music. So I want people to feel heard like they're not alone in whatever they're going through and there's always a way out.
I feel like whatever feels right for you, whatever makes you excited about what you're doing, just keep on doing that because that's what you're going to want to stick to. So for me, it was really important to just stay true to myself, do what makes me happy, be myself, and know who I am.
I love A Boogie like my entire life. I feel like how he delivers his lyrics and, you know, how he says things, it just makes sense. But I think my biggest inspiration is Lauryn Hill, just because I've always loved her music and even the message behind her music and her versatility. She can be singing, she could rap, like she's someone that I look at and I'm thinking there's a space for me in the industry because she always made music with a deeper meaning. I feel like as time goes on, that's not the type of music that people are gravitating towards. But I want to do that and make it sound good to my peers.
I feel like I'm just starting but no, honestly. I look at the things that I'm working on right now, and I'm like, that's insane that I'm putting together an EP, I have a team and people that want to work with me. Recently, my song did almost, like, 30,000 streams and I never thought that I would be in this position so soon. I always thought it would be, like, somewhere down the line. But I feel so blessed to say people listen to my music and they believe in me. So it gives me the motivation to keep going and I'm grateful.
